Steps for Learning - Activity One: Dynamics
The purpose of this activity is to introduce students to music dynamics.
1. Tell the students that dynamics are the loudness or softness of sounds. Write the word “dynamics” on the board and ask students to pronounce it aloud. Give each student a copy of the “Dynamic Symbols” cards. Using the cards, ask students to identify the meaning of the different symbols.
After each symbol is identified, invite one student to say a word or sing a word that conveys the dynamic. Then have the class echo the student’s response. Continue practicing until the students understand the basic meaning of the dynamic symbols.
Teacher Note: For K-2 students you may wish to introduce only three or four of the Dynamic Symbol Cards. For older students, or those with music experience you can add additional cards.
2. Tell your class the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Then tell the class that you are going to ask them to influence how you read the story using varied dynamics. Choose one student, and tell him or her that they are going to control how you tell this story. For example, if the student holds up the symbol “ff” you will make your voice very loud. Then retell the story and adjust the loudness or softness depending on which symbol cards the students choose.
3. Give the students an assortment of musical instruments. These can be teacher/student made instruments or instruments such as tambourines, cymbals, triangles, etc. Tell the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears again. When a student holds up a dynamic symbol, have the entire class respond accordingly with their instruments.
