Steps for Learning - Activity One: Music Performance Survey
The purpose of this activity is to provide students with an opportunity to conduct a survey to gather information about musical performances.
1. Introduce the concept of surveys to your class. Tell the students that a survey is a way to collect information. Tell your class that their goal is to create a list of fifteen different places where music is performed, and that to gather information to compile the list, they are going to conduct surveys.
2. Give each student a copy of the “Music, Music Everywhere…” handout.
Tell the students that they have two days to conduct their surveys, and encourage them to talk to a wide variety of people to gather information.
3. Ask the students to share the results of their surveys, and compile a class list. Some examples that may appear on your class list include churches, concert halls, museums, parks, private homes, and stadiums.
