Steps for Learning - Activity One: Villain Cinquain Poetry
The purpose of this activity is to create a cinquain poem on villains.
1. As a class, view the episode entitled “The Poisoned Drink.” Ask the children to look for examples of villains as they watch.
After the class is finished viewing, provide each student with a copy of the Comprehension Checker. For K-2 students, complete the Comprehension Checker as a class. Older students can work in pairs or independently to answer the questions. When the students are finished, review the answers as a class.
2. Tell your students that they are going to create a class cinquain poem on villains. First, decide what villain from Wunderkind Little Amadeus the class would like to write about. Then, write out the pattern of a cinquain poem below on the board for students to see:
- One word in the first line, which is the subject of the poem
- Two words that describe the subject in the second line
Three action words ending in "ing" in the third line of the poem (These describe something that the subject does.)
A phrase that describes additional information about the subject in the fourth line
One or two words that rename the subject in the final line of the poem
You can share the following example of a cinquain poem with your students as a model before they begin writing their class poem.
Cats
Sneaky slithery
Running Streaking Hiding
Soft furry and sometimes friendly
Cats
Encourage the students to use descriptive language as they create the poem to clearly capture their chosen Wunderkind Little Amadeus villain.
3. When your villain cinquain is finished, as a class, recite it aloud. Experiment using varied vocal pitch, tempo, and tone to convey the villain. You may also wish to create additional cinquain poems.
