Steps for Learning - Activity One: A Day in the Life
The purpose of this activity is to provide an opportunity for students to reflect on the role of friendship and play in Little Amadeus’ daily life.
1. One way to help students connect with the character of Little Amadeus is to write an imaginary diary entry from his point of view. Divide the class into pairs, and ask the students to write a brief journal entry entitled “A Wonderful Day with My Friends.” Ask the students to think about the following questions before they begin to write:
- Who are Little Amadeus’ friends?
- How does Little Amadeus play with his friends?
- What kinds of adventures does Little Amadeus have?
- When does Little Amadeus seem to have the most fun?
Teacher Note: For K-2 students, you might wish to create the diary entry as a class.
After the students are finished, ask them to share their imaginary diary entries with the entire class. Talk about how Little Amadeus had fun, and the kinds of activities he and his friends engaged in.
2. As a class, view the episode entitled “The Wrong Ship.” Ask the children to look for examples of how Little Amadeus played with different people in the episode.
After the class is finished viewing, provide each student with a copy of the Comprehension Checker. For K-2 students, complete the Comprehension Checker as a class. Older students can work in pairs or independently to answer the questions. When the students are finished, review the answers as a class.
