LESSON ONE: “SOLO FOR AMADEUS”
OVERVIEW: A leitmotif is an associated melodic phrase or figure that accompanies the reappearance of an idea, person, or situation. In the series Wunderkind Little Amadeus, as the main characters appear, each one has a distinctive leitmotif. In this lesson, students are introduced to the delightful world of Little Amadeus. They listen to Mozart’s music, view the episode “Solo for Amadeus,” make character mobiles, and create their own leitmotifs.
LESSON TWO: “THE STOLEN WATCH”
OVERVIEW: Composers create music from the sounds within them and the sounds that surround them. In this lesson, students will explore the natural and cultural influences that define places. They will use maps to identify Austria and Mozart’s birthplace, listen to music from Austria, record geographic information and create sound journals.
LESSON THREE: “PUMPERL IN TROUBLE”
OVERVIEW: In this lesson, students explore the historical context of Austria in the 18th century through Little Amadeus’ adventures. They create Venn diagrams comparing their own lives and young Mozart’s life in a variety of categories, and examine the role of music in children’s daily life. After they view the episode “Pumperl in Trouble,” they create a classroom mural.
LESSON FOUR: “KIDNAPPERS”
OVERVIEW: In this lesson, students explore the adventures of Little Amadeus in an exciting episode involving kidnapping and intrigue. After viewing the episode, students write and perform a skit and explore music dynamics.
LESSON FIVE: “THE BIRD SELLER”
OVERVIEW: A story may be told from many different perspectives. In this lesson, students view the episode of Wunderkind Little Amadeus entitled “The Bird Seller,” which contains a rich array of characters and plot twists. Students will then stage a dramatic retelling and improvise a song as they tell the story from the point of view of different characters.
LESSON SIX: “MIXED UP VIOLINS”
OVERVIEW: In this lesson, students explore musical performances of the past. They listen to a podcast featuring a young violinist, conduct music surveys, analyze, evaluate and summarize information from a variety of sources, and view an episode of Wunderkind Little Amadeus. The class will create a tableau highlighting a musical performance set in Mozart’s time.
LESSON SEVEN: “RUMORS”
OVERVIEW: In this lesson, students explore the adventures of Little Amadeus in a captivating episode involving a terrible rumor. After viewing the episode, students create a Little Amadeus rumor box, and act out a rendition of a rumor with musical accompaniment.
LESSON EIGHT: “THE BET”
OVERVIEW: The landscape of Mozart’s life influenced the music he created. In this lesson, students investigate the architecture of the city Mozart grew up in: Salzburg, Austria. They identify an assortment of geometric shapes, construct a model, and create a class presentation.
LESSON NINE: “THE MYSTERIOUS DRINK”
OVERVIEW: Villains and heroes have been part of literature, art and music since the beginning of time. In this lesson, students will view an episode of Wunderkind Little Amadeus featuring the evil antics of Devilius, Monti and Mario. They will write a cinquain poem, create a sculpture, and stage a dramatic presentation set to music.
LESSON TEN: “THE WRONG BOAT”
OVERVIEW: Friendship is celebrated in music in many different ways. In this lesson, students will explore the theme of friendship in Little Amadeus’ life. They will write an imaginary journal entry, and design a musical toy for Little Amadeus.
