Imagine You Are A Singer In A Choir!

OVERVIEW: To celebrate World’s Largest Concert 2009® in this lesson students are introduced to the song "There's Magic in the Music". Students will learn the text and music of the main theme of this song and sing as a group.

OBJECTIVES:

Students will do the following:
  • Listen to an Mp3 of school age children singing "There's Magic in the Music" provided by MENC
  • Alternatively students can rehearse the song online.
  • Participate in large group discussion
  • Play an echo game
  • Practice inhibitory control and turn-taking skills
  • Sing as a group
  • Experience rhythm, melody, pitch, phrasing and musical contour (up/down) while singing
TEACHER PREPARATION / MATERIAL NEEDED:

  • Computer with internet access and speakers for audio, Mp3 or CD players.
  • Download from MENC web site Mp3 of rehearsal music with vocals and without vocals, if desired. "With vocals" is recommended for this activity.
  • Download below Lisa Cheney's Mp3 of simple melody with pauses for echo game.
  • Download pdf of sheet music. One copy per child, if appropriate to grade level.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Listen to downloaded Mp3 of children singing "There's Magic in the Music".
  2. Discuss the song theme. Ask leading questions such as:
    • What is magic?
    • What does it mean for there to be in magic in the music?
    • What did you think of the children on the recording? Imagine what it must be like to sing a song with so many others?
    • How did the children prepare to sing for the recording? Did they practice?
    • How did they learn the music?
  3. Hand out sheet music, if appropriate to grade level. Listen again to the Mp3 of the children singing provided by MENC.
  4. Conduct an echo game to learn the song with the children. Use downloaded Mp3 of Lisa Cheney singing "There's Magic in the Music". Tell students that you will listen to another recording, of a music teacher singing the song one line at a time, and when to sing. Repeat if needed. Each phrase of the song has its own track so you may repeat specific lines if desired.
  5. Instruct class to stand and sing along with the recording of the children singing.
