Episode Description

Amadeus and his dog, Pumperl, go to the pharmacist to fetch some medicine for Amadeus’ sister Nannerl. On the way, Pumperl follows another dog and disappears. While Amadeus is searching for Pumperl, he stumbles upon a performing bear at the marketplace. He delights the bear and the audience so much with his violin playing that he’s even given some gold coins (ducats) from the crowd. Devilius is so jealous; he devises a plan to catapult his nephew Mario into Amadeus’ place the following day. But Mario’s fiddling doesn’t bring any money and instead causes the bear to flee wildly through the alleys of Vienna. Eventually, Amadeus’ wonderful violin playing prevents even worse mishaps.

MUSIC:
In the episode "The Bear is Loose", Amadeus sings, on his way to the chemist's shop, the 1st Movement from the Bassoon Concerto in B Flat Major K. 191. As the story unfolds, he plays, several times, motifs from the Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major K. 219. The most dramatic part is certainly the chasing of the bear through Vienna, which is impressively musically supported by the brilliant "Rondo alla Turca" from the Piano Sonata No. 11 in A Major K. 331, 3rd Movement.
