Building Background Activity
Activity One: Game Research
The purpose of this activity is to give students an opportunity to conduct research on board games.
1. Show your class the picture of the popular children's board game found at Candyland: http://www.lscheffer.com/CandyLand-big.jpg. Ask the students if they are familiar with the game and, if so, have them share their experiences.
2. Ask the class to brainstorm a list of things that describe board games. Record students' responses on the board.
3. As a homework assignment, have your students interview at least five people on the topic of board games. Use the questions below for the interview:
- What board games have you played?
- What do you like about board games?
- What do you dislike about board games?
- Do you have any interesting stories that happened to you while you played board games?
Have the students share the results of their interviews with the entire class. Compare the list the class generated prior to the interviews, and discuss what the students learned from asking questions.
