Steps for Learning - Activity Two: Creating the Game
The purpose of this activity is for students to create a game highlighting their understanding of the episode story line and the musical elements from the program.
1. There are two options for creating the game. For K-2 students, you may want to create one game as a class. You can work on each of the tasks in the "Make a Little Amadeus Board Game" handout to make the game. For older students, divide the class into small groups and have each group create an original game.
2. Prior to beginning, review the requirements for the game listed below.
- It must be a board game and it must have a name.
- You must include the characters from Wunderkind Little Amadeus and you must include information from the story.
- You must include information about Austria.
- You must include singing or music played on an instrument.
- You must include musical symbols such as notes, clefs, staffs or time signatures.
- You must write out the game rules.
- Your game must be fun to play!
3. Before students begin working, review the "Make a Little Amadeus Board Game" handout with the class and answer any questions they might have.
4. Provide students with the materials they will need to create their games. This includes poster boards, rulers, markers, dice, colored pencils, glue, and assorted materials to use as game pieces. Discuss the following possibilities for different game elements and invite students to add their own ideas:
- Whoever finds the bear first is the winner.
- As you move on the board you must make music.
- Different character pieces have different music associated with them.
- You must count out notes as you move.
- You have different places in Austria in different locations on the board.
These are just suggestions: encourage your students' creativity.
5. When the games are complete, host a school game fair where students can share their creations.
